The Concordia Student Union (CSU) is in the midst of preparing for its 2025 fall by-elections.

Currently in its nomination period, undergraduate students who still want to run for nomination have until Oct. 31 to gather the 40 required signatures to become a candidate.

An information session will be held on Oct. 22 at the downtown CSU offices on the seventh floor of the Hall building at 3 p.m. for potential candidates.

“I encourage anyone who cares about what they want the school to look like, and especially student life at the school, to, if not run for the CSU, at least participate in the elections and vote,” CSU chief electoral officer Callum Ellis-Mennie said. “It’s easy to do.”

The by-elections aim to fill empty seats on the CSU’s council of representatives and vote on referendum questions. All candidates and referendum questions will be announced once the campaign phase begins.

Ellis-Mennie hopes this year’s by-elections will get the student body more involved in the live debates by asking their questions directly to candidates.

“It would be nice if some people came prepared with what they feel are broadly important questions,” Ellis-Mennie said.

The campaigning period will run from Nov. 3 to Nov. 10. A public debate is scheduled for Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in the CSU lobby on the seventh floor of the Hall building.

Ellis-Mennie is planning on putting up flyers around campus in hopes of increasing awareness of the debate.

“I think [attending the debate] is probably the best way to get a sense of who you’re actually voting for,” he said.

Polling will be held from Nov. 11 through Nov. 13, before which students will receive an email from the CSU with information on how to vote.

The CSU will be tabling during the polling period at the Loyola campus in the SP building lobby, at the SGW campus in the Hall and MB building lobbies, and in the EV basement (1.116) to help students with their questions and encourage them to vote.
