Bikers Beware
CSU Legal Clinic Wants You To Know Your Rights on the Road
Concordia Student Union Legal Clinic volunteers donned clown-cop attire while patrolling the streets around Concordia this Wednesday, making sure cyclists followed the laws outlined in the Quebec Highway Safety Code.
“We are trying to sensitize people about their rights as bikers,” explained CSU Legal Information Coordinator Walter Chi-yan Tom. “We want to make students aware of what they need to do in order to avoid getting a fine.”
Those caught violating rules were given a mock-ticket that explains what the potential legal and financial consequences would be for their infraction had they been stopped by an actual Service de Police de Ville de Montreal officer.
This initiative comes as part of the CSU Legal Information Clinic’s Second Annual Bike Rights Campaign, returning in hopes of both reminding and educating Concordia students on their responsibilities as cyclists in the city.
Alongside the friendly reminders to pedal in accordance with the rules, the clinic is also holding a lottery in which students have the chance to win one of 25 Bell brand helmets. To enter the draw students must fill out a questionnaire testing their knowledge on bike-rights by the end of the month.
For more information or to enter the draw, students are invited to drop by the clinic in the Hall Building in room H-731.
