The Iconic Designer Reveals his Latest Collection

The anxiously expected Jean Paul Gaultier’s runway show took place the opening night of Festival Mode & Design de Montreal. Presented in two consecutive parts, the designer once again succeeded in plunging us into his fantastic world where the collision between reality and illusion makes attire. The first part was entitled ‘Bourgeoises sans age’ and the second ‘James Blunt’ where models walked to agent 007’s melody with the designer’s Parisian accent echoing ‘Bluuuunt’ adding his usual touch of humour.

His ready-to-wear fall 2011 collection can be described as a ‘fashion salad.’ Stamped knits, corsets, deep cleavage cocktail dresses, leather pants and skirts for both men and women and of course his eternal striped sailor classic, were featured in the runway show.

The variety of styles ranged from the Gothic underworld creature to the semi-full corset on top of net pantyhose; cashmere trenches paired with satin blouses were among the outfits that spiced up the runway.

Models’ silver hair combed up in a Hepburn-in-Breakfast at Tiffany’s-esque style captured the essence of the self-assumed, achieved, relaxed and independent woman of our century. Grey was doubtlessly the predominant tone for his most recent vision.

Among the renowned guests were Quebec’s supermodel Eve Salvail and Francisco Randez, the image of his men’s fragrance Le Male, who walked to a punched musical mix. A little of Amy Winehouse, a little lounge jazz, a little of Gaultier’s voice remixed to the sound of Parisian bells.

Once again, Gaultier made a point of his attachment to diversity, hiring models of all ages, sizes, races and genders. This unique experience that flattered our cosmopolitan city dressing it with Gaultier’s Parisian extravagant chic was another reason to love Montreal. No wonder our city was voted the UNESCO capital of design.
