Thursday’s Child One More Time

Nightlife by the Students, for the Students

The young and trendy of Montreal are creatures of habit. They know where they like their coffee, they know where they like to shop, and they most certainly know where they like to go out. Three resident partiers at Concordia have catered to this culture with Thursday’s Child at Vinyl.

The brainchild (pun half-intended) of Julian Miaja, Gracie Mitchell (of in3D promotions) and Victoria Watson marries house-party atmosphere with big, bassy club beats.

DJs including Prince Club, Fox News, Wilcox, MAX MAX & 2LIVE, Sparkz and Swag Island have raged, and collaborations with clothing companies such as American Apparel and Superfluous have made the event a mix of fashion-conscious music and looks.

Earlier in the semester the student-run night worked to help Void magazine. The fundraiser night for Concordia’s literary magazine brought an artsy vibe and the kids out to raise money for a really great cause.

Montreal has a fabulous nightlife. Let’s not kid around, it’s half the reason we’re here, right? For years most of Montreal’s anglophone, university-aged trendsters have swarmed to clubs along the Saint-Laurent strip, leaving those off the beaten path as underdogs for a nightlife hit.

“We wanted a cheap, casual night that would combine Montreal’s best DJs with an unpretentious attitude,” said co-promoter Victoria Watson.

This business model helped bring Vinyl to the attention of an entire new generation of young urbanites. We all know what it’s like to be broke (some of us may not know anything otherwise) and Thursday’s Child offered an event that was going-out-on-a-budget friendly.

With some help and sweet party pictures from For Your Benefit , it quickly became a place to see and be seen. Clichés aside, nobody who attended the event could say they had a time that wasn’t memorable (or perhaps a really good time they didn’t remember…) or that they wouldn’t be back in two weeks for more.

With the academic year drawing to a close, Montreal’s favourite party animals and creatures of the night will have to drink themselves smart elsewhere after one last Thursday’s Child. But for those who have attended a Thursday’s Child event, they’ll still have the friends, photos and (maybe) the memories.
