Lancers 4, Stingers 2: Lancers crush Stingers in first at-home loss
The Stingers record their first regular season loss at the Ed Meagher Arena
Despite Concordia University building momentum in the third period, the Stingers men’s hockey team suffered its first regulation loss of the 2024-2025 season at the hands of the University of Windsor Lancers on Jan. 10.
While Windsor dominated puck possession during the first 40 minutes of play, Concordia led a physical game by hitting their opponents hard into the boards.
“It was a bad game,” head coach Marc-André Élément said. “But in this league, it’s good for the [players to learn] that we have to play a game of 60 minutes and not 20.”
Windsor’s Matt McNamara deflected a shot into the net, putting Windsor on top, 1-0, with just under 11 minutes left in the first period.
Less than two minutes later, forward Ty Toews found the back of the net, doubling the Lancers’ lead to end the period.
Near the middle of the second period, Concordia took two penalties, 22 seconds apart, leading the Lancers to a five-on-three powerplay. Despite the penalties, Élément described it as a positive shift in his team’s play.
“It’s always important to kill [a five-on-three],” he said. “The guys were really pumped afterwards.”
The Stingers came back to the ice strong after being down 3-0 over the Lancers in the third period. With roughly five minutes remaining in the third period, Stingers forward Blake Richardson scored, getting Concordia on the board with a score of 3-1. Less than five minutes later, Nathan Lavoie added to the tally with his fourth goal of the season, which resulted in a score of 3-2.
“What we did here is we are showing the crowd that we can show up and come back from this deficit,” Lavoie said.
Lancers head coach Kevin Hamlin then called a timeout to give his team some time to regroup and strategize after the two quick Stingers goals. The Lancers held onto the lead for the rest of the game and scored an empty net goal late in the third to claim the 4-2 victory.
The Stingers bounced back on Jan. 11 and defeated the University of Waterloo Warriors 7-2.
“Good teams find a way to win after a loss,” Lavoie said.
The Stingers’ next game will be on the road against the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
