Following a 87-24 blowout win over Bishop’s Gaiters this past Thursday night, Concordia Stingers women’s basketball head coach Keith Pruden was asked about his team not reaching the 90-point plateau during the game.

“Ninety?” he scoffed. “100 is the benchmark, not 90.”

The Stingers won’t necessarily mind falling short of 90 points, registering their first win of the season over Bishop’s team. The lead was never in doubt, leading as they were ahead of the Gaiters from start to finish.

“We played very well,” said Pruden. “We were very loose offensively. Bishop’s had some tough matchups with us defensively and we could’ve come down and taken undisciplined shots, and we did once or twice. But for the most part, we actually played organized basketball and that’s why we were able to score so easily at times.”

Unlike their season opening loss to the Laval Rouge et Or, where the Stingers mostly relied on forward Marilyse Roy-Viau and All-Canadian guard Kaylah Barrett for scoring, four players registered at least 15 points in the win, as forward Richelle Gregoire led her team in scoring with 21 points.

“We knew we had to come hard even though we knew Bishop’s is not the best team in the league,” said forward Marilyse Roy-Viau, who recorded a double-double, scoring 15 points and adding 15 rebounds. “We wanted to [make] a statement from the last game [against Laval] and I think we did a good job as a team.

“It was a good team win.”

The Stingers ended the first quarter up 27-7, not allowing a point from the Gaiters until halfway through the first quarter. As Concordia continued to run away with the game, they held the Gaiters to 7 points total following the second and third quarters.

The Stingers only mustered 14 points in the fourth, in comparison to a more respectable 10 for the Gaiters, but the game was already put to bed before the halftime whistle blew.

Concordia will take on the McGill Martlets in their upcoming game at McGill on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 6:00 p.m.
