Knowing they would need three points in order to keep a contending spot for the playoffs, the Concordia Stingers took a 3-1 win against the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes.

“We stepped on the field with purpose,” said head coach Jorge Sanchez, “All week we told the girls that this would be like a play-off game, that it was mandatory three points and they played as if it was mandatory three points.”

Midfielder Chama Sedki and forward Sophie Beaudry scored the two first goals at the end of the first half. Finally, Midfielder Julia Bianchi sealed the win for Concordia in the last minutes of the game with a third goal.

Sedki scored the first goal on a free kick, sending the ball from the right side of the pitch directly into the upper left corner of the goal.

“We have identified how we want to play, it took us a while to find it,” said Sanchez, “We really have to make sure we don’t get away when it gets panicky.”

The Stingers had many occasions during the last minutes of both periods. Captain Alyssa Ruscio said the team lacked efficiency and consistency and could have scored more.

“We started a bit slow,” said Ruscio, “We did not score in the first 20 minutes, which was our goal.”

The team got more offensive at the end of the first period but conceded a goal to the Patriotes the first minutes following half-time. It gave Stinger’s opponents more confidence but goalkeeper
Carmen Milne‘s reactivity did not let the Patriotes a chance to score a second goal.

“This is a team that has given up a lot of goals and we did not score a lot,” said Sanchez, “we have to be more opportunistic.”

At the end of the second half, Chama Sedki stole the ball from the Patriots, giving Julia Bianchi the opportunity to score, ensuring the victory of the Stingers.

Ruscio said the team’s game quality was better compared with their last game, allowing them to be more “first on the ball.”

“Even when we were scrambling, there was still something, you could see the girls were hungry and pushing and helping each other,” said Sanchez, “Everybody did her part.”

The Stingers will host the Sherbrooke Vert et Or on Sept. 23 at 8:30 p.m., for their fourth game of the season.

“It’s going to be tough, we probably will have to defend a lot,” said Sanchez, “If we do a one to nothing, it’s a perfect game.”
