Women’s Soccer: Lack of Finish
Stingers Fall to the Laval Rouge et Or
The Stingers women’s soccer team dropped their second game of the season in a 2-0 loss to the Laval Rouge et Or on Friday evening.
“[Laval] got a couple of chances and finished, and we got many more chances and just couldn’t finish,” said Stingers women’s soccer head coach Jorge Sanchez.
The Stingers came out strong in the opening half with two great chances from Gabriela Padvaiska in the 8th minute and from Kayla Myre in the 16th minute.
Their failure to capitalize on their shots would come back to haunt them though, as Laval forward Joëlle Gosselin scored the game’s first goal in the 23rd minute.
Unfortunately for Concordia, their inability continued to plague them in the second half because they failed to capitalize on their scoring chances.
Their late attempts to tie the game proved fruitless. And at the 88th minute, Rouge et Or forward Léa Chastenay-Joseph’s goal extinguished the Stingers hopes.
The players were not down on themselves even after the loss. Goalkeeper Alexandra Lato said they “put [in] the effort” and “worked hard”.
Looking forward, she said the team plans to work on “finishing and actually getting the goals on our side”.
Despite missing many opportunities to bury Laval, confidence is not lost for the Stingers as defender Alyssa Ruscio feels her team played well enough against Laval.
“[We] put up a good fight against them [Laval],” said defender Alyssa Ruscio. “[They’re] one of the top contenders in the league.”
Coach Sanchez is also looking forward to the next game and is looking to move on from the loss.
“Losses are tough,” he said. “But it is a building process and I think there are a lot of positives.”
The Stingers play again on Sunday, September 14th at UQAM at 7:00pm.
