Hills of undergraduate memories

Reflecting on the end of freshman year in the middle of hope and despair

Where can we look to when all we see are deadlines and trying times? Graphic Halle Keays

On the snowy hills of undergraduate memories

old loves of climbs and generational sharpness

come down sly and unseen

in our minds,

those that we used to dance with

but no more

we are becoming in each other's arms.

they remain just as we do,

to the sounds of the Beach Boys and the voids of Pink Floyd.

eclipsed by the world's end

on endless graduate nights of work

deeming to forget when the wall falls on you like a stone

when your mother looks on in despair

your home is

nothing

but chaos.

How can I forget myself in these moments of total abyss?

How can I forget myself when I eat less and work more,

when everything seems to be working out

when everything is collapsing on our heads at the same time.

Still, we find moments between frenzy in the pet names

we toss around

everything that we dreamt of

humbled by our own bodies.

still

Let’s steal away the cold

to the coastal cozy of California!

in your palpable and sweaty crowds, Montreal,

we're all going to grow up too fast.

On your streets and warmly lit curbs

we'll dance under the summer heat

and press ourselves against a melodic haze at the edge

the daylight extends into a city tropic at last

we shed our layers

sharing indulging stories over cocktail breath

remembering the bright beaches and friends

diving into the semester’s end

like our harmonizing bodies in water

warm waves of blue and joy traverse

birds call to one another

squirrels gather nuts on the roof

the tethers of our lives

the little neighbouring cats we miss so

sworn in by my own lifetime

On the hills of a July night on the firm grip of your burly arms and surly songs

on the crest of my young adulthood

I will forget all

about those I regret

in my little haven I’ll reel it back

into the rippling waves

We are so weary when it all washes away

let’s share the wave with the roaring, yet gentle sea turtle of our

mad

        mad

               world.
