Disappointing Weekend
Losing Streak Stands at 11 for Women’s Hockey
Concordia 0 Carleton 3
They looked and played like a team that had been eliminated from the playoffs.
The Concordia Stingers were shutout by the Carleton Ravens on Sunday, losing 3-0, following a loss Friday night as well where they went 59 minutes without scoring a goal against Université de Montréal Carabins.
“I wasn’t pleased with the way we played,” said Stingers head coach Les Lawton. “I just didn’t think we played with the passion and the emotion we should have played with.”
While Lawton believes his team could have done better, there were some positives to take from Sunday’s game. For instance, as they struggled to solve Ravens goaltender Tamber Tisdale, they were out-shooting the Ravens 30-29.
Even still, he believes his team has given up on themselves. “Deep down the players have lost confidence in their abilities,” said Lawton. “When you do that you have the tendency to do a little too much, you squeeze your stick a little harder, you don’t have trust in your teammates.”
By the time the second period was four minutes in, the Ravens caught onto this lack of passion and scored twice in a span of 30 seconds. Forward Sydnie MacDonald and defender Kelsey VanderVeen each slipped one past Stingers goaltender Marie Pier Remillard. Before the period was done, Sadie Wegner potted her sixth of the season to go up 3-0.
Come the third, the Stingers had opportunities to get back into the game. On a couple of occasions, Carleton found themselves shorthanded but either the Stingers failed to capitalize or they took a penalty of their own immediately after.
Even with the lack confidence, the opposition still found they’re a force to reckon with, physically.
“Concordia plays us tough every single time, and to be able to come to the rink here today, and our goaltender to get a shutout, I’m really happy how she competed for us,” said Ravens head coach Shelley Coolidge referring to Tisdale who stopped all 30 shots she faced.
Even still, the Stingers continue to find ways to lose as they have gone 0-11 dating back to Nov.11. They will try to salvage a victory this Friday night when the Ottawa Gee-Gees visit and Sunday afternoon when they cross town to take on the McGill Martlets. The action begins at 7:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
