This year, The Link helped coordinate Student Journalism Week, which kicks off Saturday Feb. 13 and runs through Feb. 20. J-Week is organized annually by The Daily Publication Society—i.e. The McGill Daily and Le Délit.

Join The McGill Daily, Le Délit, and The Link for a jam-packed week of free events on journalism and media! This annual series, for the first time spread across two different universities, will cover topics from race and media to investigative reporting to making a career in an increasingly competitive industry. Whether you’re new to reporting or you’re a seasoned journalist, this is your chance to meet professional journalists and delve into engaging discussions about media.

French presentations by Fabien Deglise (Le Devoir), Judith Lachapelle (La Presse), and Rolan-Yves Carignan (Libération, The Gazette) followed by a panel discussion for members of the student press.

POSTPONED: Saturday, February 20: Race and the media: a workshop with Kim Milan, 2 p.m. Location Centre for Gender Advocacy Concordia (1500 de Maisonneuve Blvd. W. suite 404)
Led by award-winning and internationally acclaimed artist, educator, and writer Kim Milan, this workshop will delve into the issues at the intersections of race and the media, as well as opening up a discussion on strategies for journalists and writers to dismantle racism in the media.
Please note that registration is required for the event, and that attendance is capped at 40 because of space constraints.

Bio: A daughter of the diaspora, Arawak, West African, Indian and Dutch, hailing from Trinidad and living between Toronto & New York. Kim Katrin Milan is an award winning internationally acclaimed artist, educator and writer. Kim is the co founder and the Executive Director of The People Project, 8 years in the making; a movement of queer and trans folks of color and our allies, committed to individual and community empowerment through alternative education, art activism and collaboration. A public researcher and human rights educator, she shares over 80 unique resources and presentations as well as delivered hundreds of workshops around race, gender, power, privilege, consent, creation, food and entrepreneurship. Kim also engages in community based healing initiatives including teaching Queer and Brown Girls Yoga.

Wednesday February 17: Feminist Journalism Practices, 6-8 p.m. Location Arts W20
How can writers and journalists integrate intersectional feminist practices into journalism and the media? Join us for a critical discussion of the emergence of popular, ‘feminist’-oriented media platforms, as well as the possibilities for what feminist journalism could look like.
Featuring Hepzibeth Lee, Kai Cheng, and Studio XX.
Thursday February 18: Investigative Journalism, 6:30-8:30 p.m. South Side Cafeteria (Shatner Building)
If you’re interested in learning more about what it takes to do investigative reporting, this workshop is for you. Whether you’re digging up dirt on political corruption, or interested in how to better navigate hidden information, this panel will discuss everything there is to know about investigative journalism.

Friday February 19: Arts Criticism, 6 p.m. Club Lounge (University Centre)
If arts criticism catches your eye, come to this panel to hear experienced critics from leading Montreal newspapers, magazines, and online media platforms discuss working in the field.

Saturday February 20: Making a Career out of Journalism, 4 p.m. CSU Lounge (1455 de Maisonneuve Blvd. W., 7th floor) *Accessible
The path becoming a professional journalist has drastically changed in the past few years. Whether you’re a blogger, freelancer, or student editor, this panel will discuss how to navigate this changing industry, and how to turn your writing skills and experience into a career.
