Special Concordia Student Union Meeting Adjourns Early
You can’t say they didn’t try.
The final meeting of the 2011-2012 Concordia Student Union Council adjourned after a little more than an hour on May 30, as only five voting members were able to attend.
“It was essentially a risk tonight,” said CSU Chair Marc-Antoni Tarondo after the meeting. “We could have talked about everything, and they could have dissected everything again next meeting. It was up to this Council to decide if they still wanted to go through with that, and the consensus initially was that they were.”
The special meeting was called to discuss propositions for reforming the CSU electoral system, as well as other changes. Copies of the CSU Code of Standing Regulations with recommendations for changes were circulated and presented by former CSU President Amine Dabchy and Patrice Blais, a Concordia professor and lawyer who is also a former CSU member.
After some discussion of the proposed changes, including debate over whether or not the Events Committee and Women’s Caucus are to be eliminated, it was decided by those present to adjourn. Council requires a quorum of a majority of councillors for any votes to be binding.
The meeting was the last for the current executive team, but Lex Gill—the CSU councillor who became president on June 1—invited all former executives and councillors to attend the first meeting of the new Council, at which time discussion of the proposed reforms will resume.
