Concordia Stingers men’s hockey team captain, Olivier Hinse, was named the winner of the Dr. Randy Gregg Award on Wednesday. The award is presented by the Canadian Interuniversity Sport to the hockey player who best exhibits excellence in ice hockey, academics and community service.

Hinse, who was nominated for the award last year, is the first Concordia Stinger to receive the award.

In his first year with the team, he was named assistant captain, and was named captain in his second year.

This past season, the second-year forward finished second in CIS for goals, scoring 18 in 26 games. Hinse also had 13 assists, resulting in 31 points; good for 10th overall among players within the Ontario University Athletics.

Off the ice, Hinse is studying Child Studies and maintains a GPA of 3.17. Hinse also is an active member of the community, volunteering for a number of programs in addition to coaching a junior AAA hockey team.

The forward has also participated in the Stingers community skating party, the Centraide Walk, and has volunteered with the mental health clinic L’Abri en Ville. He also works part-time during the season, 20 hours a week.

The Dr. Randy Gregg Award is named after National Hockey League defenceman Randy Gregg, who won five Stanley Cups in the 1980s with the Edmonton Oilers. Gregg is currently a physician in Edmonton.
