Hard Work Pays Off
ConU Hockey Takes Home Opener With Convincing Win
Concordia’s men’s hockey team delivered a solid effort Oct. 14, shutting down the Brock Badgers en route to a 5-1 victory in their home opener.
“I thought we played a complete game tonight,” said Stingers head coach Kevin Figsby. “We stuck to the gameplan and we did everything that we wanted to do. We worked hard and we got the result we wanted and we’re believing in ourselves a little bit more.”
After a scoreless first period, Stingers right-winger Michael Stinziani got the ball rolling when he scored a goal assisted by Eric Begin in the opening minute of the second period.
The Stingers would add another when centre Charles Antoine Messier directed a shot past Badgers goalie Kurt Jory to go up 2-0. Before the end of the period, Stinziani added his second of the night after connecting on a passes from Begin. Left-winger Samuel Moreau collected the second assist on the play.
After throttling the opposition for much of the second, the Badgers scored an early third period goal when forward Dylan MacEachern snuck one past Stingers goaltender Nicholas Champion.
Yet this was all the bragging rights they would get as Stingers defenseman Etienne St. Germain and centre George Lovatsis potted a goal apiece to finish of the Badgers.
After opening their season with three consecutive losses, the victory came as a relief to the Stingers bench. “It’s good to have a win today,” said Messier, “Our first three games were a bit hard for us. Tonight was good to be home and have a win.”
Figsby credits the victory to the hard work his team put in practice on the defensive unit. “When you have a team that’s talented offensively, you have to spend more time on the defensive side of the game,” said Figsby. “We spent the full week in practice working in our own zone.”
The Stingers take to the ice again tonight when they host the Universite de Quebec a Trois Rivieres (UQTR) Patriotes. The puck drops at 8:30p.m.
