Letter: Support a Daycare and Nursery
The role of a Student Union should be to consistently seek better support for marginalized populations within its membership and work towards greater accessibility for post-secondary education. A fundamental way in which the CSU has been fulfilling this mandate over the past year is through the daycare and nursery project.
Student-parents face a panoply of stressors and barriers when attempting to complete their studies while juggling work, school and family life. The CSU Daycare will provide flexible, on-campus childcare for student-parents, further strengthening this community on our campus. The daycare service will allow student-parents to accommodate their already difficult class schedules including night classes, and provide stability for their families.
This very important initiative is seeking to reallocate $0.24 per credit of the Student Space, Accessible Education and Legal Contingency fund towards a new daycare and nursery. This reallocation does not increase the Student Union fee and would be a long term investment in a service greatly benefiting undergraduates.
As men, we understand that the burden of care giving is unequally placed upon women, which gives this initiative an even greater importance in building a more equitable Concordia community. Please vote YES to the Daycare referendum question from Nov. 24 through 26!— _ Michael Giesbrecht and Aloyse Muller, Arts & Science undergrads_
