Steve’s Music Founder Dies at 65

Steve Kirman opened the first Steve’s Music on St. Antoine Rd. when he was 19 years old.

Steve Kirman, founder and owner of Steve’s Music, passed away on Saturday. He was 65 years old.

Kirman opened the original, still-operating store on St. Antoine St. in 1965 when he was just 19 years old. The store has since become iconic in Montreal’s music scene—its name synonymous with music gear—and now takes up an entire city block.

“He was still the president of the company and very much involved,” said Gilles Dicaire, general manager of the St. Antoine location. “He wasn’t in the store that often for the last couple years, but any major decision was still made by him.”

In its 47 years (and counting) of business, Steve’s Music has grown to include locations in Toronto and Ottawa, both of which have been similarly successful, and the chain has become a staple for music equipment in all three cities. The funeral will be held Tuesday morning, when Steve’s Music will be closed to allow store employees to pay their respects.
