Football Team Preview: Who Will Lead?

It’s a scorching hot Monday morning that will surely get hotter and more humid as the hours go by. It’s the type of day that would make anybody want to wear the least amount of clothing possible. Instead, dozens of Concordia Stingers football players are in full gear at training camp, running drills on the brand new turf installed at Concordia Stadium. There is, however, a notable absentee at this year’s camp.

Les Lawton Takes Leave
The Concordia Stingers announced late Friday night that women’s hockey head coach Les Lawton will be taking an immediate and “indefinite medical leave of absence”. Women’s hockey team assistants Julie Chu and Mike McGrath will take over head coaching duties in Lawton’s absence.

Independence Sink FC Montreal With Second Half Goal
It only took one minute for substitute Caleb Calvert to make an impact for the Charlotte Independence. Moments after being brought into the game, the forward scored a goal, which ended up being the game-winner, giving his club a 1-0 victory over FC Montreal at Stade Saputo this past Wednesday evening.

In the midst of their rebranding, the Concordia Stingers have stressed one very important theme—family. In the last 18 months, the Stingers have made changes to their athletic programs by hiring former Stingers to lead the way—the Donovan brothers for the football team, Rastko Popovic for men’s basketball, and now interim men’s hockey head coach Marc-André Element.

ConU Gold Shines Brighter
The Concordia Stingers won a preseason battle by a score of 21-18 against Queen’s Golden Gaels on Sunday afternoon at Concordia Stadium. Despite trailing for most of the game, the Stingers managed to score the go-ahead touchdown with under three minutes to play in the fourth quarter.
