Cinética: A Film by Ana Cembrero Coca
In 29 minutes of dynamic cinematography and no dialogue, Ana Cembrero Coca’s Cinética challenges our self-awareness and capacity to interpret abstract symbolism represented through dance.
The film features four women moving in several different spaces, from a half-full bathtub to the open sea.
The beginning of the film sparks curiosity as a girl breaks through a hardened dry layer of earth, digging up a flower buried upside down. Sharp images contrast constant gray tones, evoking imagery without color as distraction. The music’s intense and soft variations embellish experience of the abstract production.
Four girls hanging from chairs suspended from the walls evokes almost a surreal surrounding, taken from the strangest of dreams. The four dancers are very similar in height, body shape and proportions, creating a mirror image in paired choreography.
Cinética explores the abstract world of our inner fights, dances and flights. It tickles our thoughts by vividly transporting our judgment to unexplored pathways.
It’s an abstract heartbeat for each to interpret, the freedom of navigation driven by emotional involvement this film demands. It is truly an achievement to capture the viewer this deeply in a short production without color or dialogue.
