Stingers 1, Carabins 3: The Carabins win the Theresa Humes Cup
The Carabins continue their strong run against the Stingers, beating Concordia in the final of the cup
The Concordia University Stingers women’s hockey team made it to the final of the Theresa Humes Cup, where they lost 3-1 to the Université de Montréal (UdeM) Carabins, the reigning U Sports National Champions.
This year marks the first season of Camille Richard’s captaincy. She has a positive outlook for the year and enjoys the fun of this tournament.
“It's fun to have a faceoff against other teams from other conferences, [and get to] play our biggest rival, the Carabins,” Richard said.
After Stingers forward Rosalie Parent won the opening faceoff, the Carabins dominated the first period, with much more time spent in Concordia’s zone than their own. Then, 12 minutes in, Richard took an illegal body-checking penalty.
During the penalty, a shot from Carabins forward Ann-Sophie Bédard bounced over Stingers goaltender Belle Mende, and in the struggle, Carabins forward Laurie Vésina flicked the puck into the net, giving the Carabins the first goal of the game.
With less than a minute left in the first period, the Carabins took a hooking penalty which carried over to the next period, as the first frame ended 1-0 for the Carabins.
“We have to be able to go hard, and take time and space away,” Stingers head coach Julie Chu said. “Especially a good team like Montreal, [we can’t] give them opportunities to control the play.”
After killing the penalty, Carabins forward Amélie Poiré-Lehoux rushed across the ice, and a grounded wrist shot made it through the Stingers goaltender Belle Mende’s pads, extending the Carabins lead to 2-0.
During a power play, Stingers forward Emilie Lussier took three hard shots on net in only thirty seconds, with none scoring. This trend of Stingers shots being saved continued through another power play.
In a third Carabins penalty kill in the 2nd period alone, their defence was so strong the Stingers couldn't even keep possession in their zone. The 2nd period ended 2-0 for UdeM.
Both teams picked up the pace in the third period, and the puck frequently went back and forth between zones. During a power play, Concordia had a few near misses with tipped shots and crossbar hits.
In the second half of the third, the Stingers started to control the puck more, but just couldn’t get it to the net. With four minutes left, they pulled the goaltender for a 5-on-6.
Poiré-Lehoux intercepted a blue-line pass in the Carabins zone and fired the puck down the ice into the empty net, making the score 3-0.
Despite the dominant Carabins lead, the Stingers never gave up, and with just 30 seconds left on the clock, Richard found Stingers forward Kate Furlong for a one-time slap shot straight to the top corner of UdeM’s net.
“I think we’re gonna learn a lot,” Furlong said. “We’re gonna take a lot away from this, and try to get better for the regular season.”
Though the cup went to the UdeM, Concordia finished the game on a good note with the final score being 3-1. With the Theresa Humes Cup wrapped up, the Stingers only have three pre-season games left before the season begins in mid-October.
