The tuition hikes passed in the 2011-2012 budget will stand.

The 2012-2013 budget only adds a provision to the plan for a “Fair and Balanced University Funding Plan,” are to increase the amount of funding that universities have access to from $850 million to $967 million.

The budget cites taking “into account the upward revision of clientele over the past year,” as the reason for increased funding.

Student leaders are disappointed in the decision go along with the hikes but Finance Minister Raymond Bachand said that the hikes are irrevocable.

This comes right before a province-wide student strike on March 22 that is predicted to see tens of thousands take to the streets.

Concordia university has decided to shut its doors on Thursday in light of the demonstration.
