Montreal Muslims March in Commemoration of Hussein ibn Ali
Despite rainy skies, members of Montreal’s Islamic community joined together on Nov. 10 to march in commemoration of the Shiite martyr Hussein ibn Ali.
Son of the Prophet Muhammad’s daughter Fatimah, Hussein ibn Ali fought against the Umayyads, the second Islamic caliphate. The day of his death is an annual day of mourning for Shiite Muslims.
The march stopped in front of Concordia’s Hall Building, and speeches were given by participants calling for peace, justice and liberty.
The event was held two days after the tabling of the Charter of Quebec Values, which would ban the wearing of “ostentatious” religious symbols, such as kippahs or hijabs in public institutions.
