Mob Squad Gets Serious
Battle Against Tuition Hikes is Heating Up at ConU
The Concordia Student Union-led Mob Squad is shifting into high gear.
With a poster campaign, lunch hour mini-marches, info sessions, ‘Fuck Tuition’ parties at Reggie’s and an anti-tuition-hike Halloween party on Oct. 31, students at Concordia will not be able to escape the Mob Squad.
In conjunction with other universities, the CSU Mob Squad will be taking students to Quebec City on Oct. 21 to “welcome” the Liberals when the National Assembly begins its fall session.
In an effort to increase support for the anti-tuition-hike day of action on Nov. 10, the Mob Squad is now targeting student associations and faculty.
The Arts and Science Federation of Associations recently voted to support the strike action–meaning that the 18,000 ASFA students could be out in the streets come Nov. 10.
ASFA’s three-part motion to support the Nov. 10 protest included a call for a general assembly to vote on an official strike mandate and a motion to support member associations in pursuing their own strike mandates.
“One of the most powerful kinds of mobilization work that you can do is the legwork within your own association,” said CSU President Lex Gill.
The Graduate Students’ Association has called a general assembly for Nov. 3 to vote on a strike mandate.
Speaking about the power of getting faculty on the side of the anti-tuition protesters, Holly Nazar, GSA VP External, said, “There’s no better broadcast system than faculty doing announcements for us in their classes.”
The Mob Squad hopes to get faculty on their side of the anti-tuition movement so that they will grant academic amnesty in their individual classes and work the issue of the protests into their lectures.
