I would really like to thank the Concordia Students Union and Arts and Science Federation of Associations for helping me go on the annual New York City trip on the weekend of Feb. 17.
It’s hard for me, as a disabled student, to do any activities. I encourage all disabled students to get involved in student life. There is so much more to being a student than just studying and writing papers.
A lot of people have been badmouthing the CSU as of late, because some students don’t think that the CSU is there to help [and] think that they’re only there to pad their resumes.
I’m here to tell you that this union is here to help all students.
This was my first trip ever and I had a blast going to all the New York City landmarks—Madison Square Garden, Time Square and, my personal favourite, NBC Studios.
This trip has been a year-and-a-half in the works and I could not go if it wasn’t for two very special CSU members—Laura Glover, VP Student Life & Sustainability, and Morgan Pudwell, VP Advocacy. They really took care of everything. They took care of my hotel accommodations and made sure that I got an adapted hotel room that was wheelchair accessible.
They were the ones that also came to me to encourage other disabled students to come. The other students I talked to were too shy, because they didn’t want to be a burden. But I was treated as an equal. I went to all kinds of group functions, like a group dinner and hotel room parties that went into the wee hours of the morning.
They were always offering to help so that I could enjoy the trip to the fullest. I will definitely go next year. I have made friends that will last forever and I will cherish the memories. A big thank you goes to CSU President Lex Gill, who is responsible for leading the charge.
As a disabled person, it is very hard for me to have a ‘normal life.’ But I don’t let my disability stop me from living life to the fullest.
Without a doubt, it isn’t easy, but I still do 95 per cent of the things I want to do. I couldn’t do this without help.
I just want to thank the entire CSU and ASFA President Alex Gordon for making this trip so special for me.
