The Final Countdown: One More Weekend of Fringe

Crazy Love is a relationship from hell based on a true story. Photo Pierre Chauvin

It’s the final weekend of the Montreal Fringe Festival. You probably don’t have enough time to see every show you’d like to and you also probably don’t have the money, let’s be serious. Our advice is to take in some fresh talent that has bloomed this week at the festival.

Crazy Love tells the story that we’ve all had nightmares about. Yes – the one about the crazy/pregnant ex-girlfriend. Written by Concordian David Sklar and starring Amy Kitz and Braulio Elicer, Crazy Love was the 2010 winner of the Kit Brennan award for “Best Play.” The play is fast paced and enjoyable. Based on a true story, expect to be reminded why relationships are sometimes too much trouble. It’s Playing 1:30pm June 17th, 11:45pm June 18th & 1:30pm June 19th. Facebook Event

Young actress Amanda McQueen stars as 91-year-old Sister Constance McMullen in The Motherhouse. The play is the brainchild of Concordia playwriting student Tamara Lagrandeur, and to say McQueen is captivating is an understatement. She has the audience wrapped around her arthritic finger from the moment she shuffles on the stage. The piece is balanced by McQueen’s immaculate, understated physical portrayal of Sister McMullen and the character’s larger than life personality. The team has made great use of the intimate space at Montreal Improv. Expect a great story and to laugh (hard). Did we mention that beer is sold at this venue…for $4? Playing Saturday, June 18th @ 11:15pm. Facebook Event

Clint Earle’s piece, Between Gossip and Dreams, falls into our category of shows to avoid. The piece suffers from Earle’s uninspired direction and a story full of holes. The show felt like being between hell and a cast who didn’t want to be there either. Our heart goes out to the band who carried the show. But who are we to tell you how to spend your time and money? Confirm or deny the rumours on 9:30pm Saturday, June 18th or 2:15pm Sunday, June 19th. Facebook Event

We give Elevated: Pushing Buttons by Joseph Ste. Marie two elevators going down, which is heart breaking because Joseph one of the hardest working Fringe volunteers out there. We do appreciate your hard work, Joesph – don’t give up! Playing 7:00pm Friday, June 17thth & 3:00pm Sunday, June 19th. Facebook Event

If you like convincing fights scenes and the spectacle of theatre, Crossroads is a must see! JingJu Canada is Canada’s first company dedicated to training and performing the art of Chinese Opera. Expect one of the most technique based shows in the Fringe and a cast who loves what they do. Playing 8:00pm Friday, June 17th & 2:00pm Sunday, June 19th. Facebook Event
