Despite losing rookie forward Suzie Sauriol to a lower-body injury suffered in the pre-game warm-up, the Stingers beat the Carleton Ravens 4-2 this past Sunday afternoon.

“I think today was a great stepping stone for us after last week [we let the lead] slip away,” said Stingers captain Danielle Scarlett. “I think this week we capitalized on our scoring chances, cause we needed those two points moving forward.”

Playing home at Ed Meagher Arena for the first time this season, the Stingers got on the board on their second shot of the game, thanks to a goal from forward Alexandria D’Onofrio.

A couple minutes later, the Stingers scored on a power play goal from Scarlett, giving themselves a two-goal advantage.

The Stingers got into penalty trouble early in the second period and gave the visitors a five-on-three power play for a minute. The Ravens capitalized when forward Sidney Weiss scored on a rebound to cut into the 2-1 lead. It was Carleton’s first goal in over eight periods dating back to their first game of the season against the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

Midway through the second period, after Concordia was unable to capitalize on their own five-on-three power play, the Stingers restored their two-goal cushion when rookie forward Devon Thompson scored on a rebound past Ravens goalie Tamber Tisdale.

The goal was Thompson’s first in a Stingers uniform, and it also proved to be the eventual game winner.

“It feels pretty good to be able to share this experience with people that you work with every day,” said Thompson. “Being able to score my first goal as a Stinger at home is pretty cool. Even better that I got to share with the team.”

In the third period, the Stingers added to their lead with a goal from veteran forward and alternate captain Alyssa Sherrard, who nearly went to end-to-end with the puck before scoring past Tisdale.

Just over a minute later, Raven defender Kaylie Welk was finally able to solve Bache, making the score 4-2, but it wasn’t enough, as the Stingers earned their first victory of the season.

“It’s nice to get the two points although it wasn’t easy to put them away,” said head coach Les Lawton. “We worked hard, have trouble putting games away, but it’s good to get the win.”

The Stingers now have a record of 1-1-1, and will play back-to-back games this weekend, including a Friday morning tilt against the McGill Martlets, and a rematch against the Ravens in Ottawa on Saturday.
