Concordia’s Senate, the university’s highest academic decision-making body, approved the addition of a librarian to its voting members yesterday afternoon.

Aside from the University Librarian Guylaine Beaudry, there was no representation on Senate for the nearly 40 librarians and information services staff.

“I think libraries are changing a lot,” said Joanna Duy, a librarian at the Vanier Library.

“Librarians have an important role in the university,” she added. “We’ve always had an important role in what goes on in helping students find information and thinking critically about information.”

Librarians have spots on the senates of at least 16 other universities in Canada, including the University of British Columbia, Dalhousie, McGill, the University of Ottawa, Ryerson and York.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for librarians to become more involved and engaged in the institution,” Duy said. “We’re very excited about that.”

Senate also voted to discontinue the School for Extended Learning. All of its activities will be transferred to the Centre for Continuing Education.

With the dissolution of the School and the addition of the librarian voting member, Senate will have 53 voting members and nine non-voting members.
