Led by Queen’s Golden Gaels receiver Doug Corby, Team East defeated Team West 29-21 at the 2015 Canadian Interuniversity East-West Bowl, a showcase for the best university football players across Canada, at Percival Molson Stadium on Saturday.

The Arts and Science major was named Team East’s offensive player of the game thanks to his three touchdowns, an East-West Bowl game record, and led all receivers with 131 yards receiving.

Despite only making four catches on the day, Corby laughed off the notion that he should have had more ball time.

“You’ve got to spread the ball around and just got to take opportunities when you get them,” Corby said.

Corby scored the first touchdown of the game, receiving a 63-yard pass from quarterback Brandon Leyh, and his two other touchdowns occurred in the second half. This included the game-winning score with 5:17 left in the fourth quarter.

Not to be outdone, West receiver Jimmy Ralph, from the University of Alberta, was named best offensive player of his team after scoring two touchdowns in the loss. “It was fun,” he said. “Coaches gave me an opportunity to make some plays, everybody out there was making plays.”

“To be the best you’ve got to beat the best right? [There’s] mistakes you’ve got to clean up if you’re trying to get drafted,” — Concordia Stingers DB Rashawn Perry

Université de Laval defensive back Michaël Langlois and Guelph linebacker Curtis Newton were named the top defensive players of the game for Team East and West respectively.

Meanwhile, the Concordia Stingers had four players at this year’s East-West Bowl including defensive backs Rashawn Perry and Mikael Charland, linebacker Arto Khatchikian and offensive lineman Roman Grozman.

Despite recording 88 yards through kick and punt returns in the game, Perry, who left the game in the fourth quarter after suffering a left leg injury, felt he made a few mistakes.

“To be the best you’ve got to beat the best right?” Perry said. “[There’s] mistakes you’ve got to clean up if you’re trying to get drafted,”

Ultimately, the Stingers were happy to be well represented in this year’s bowl game. Even if they had to put aside differences with rival teammates for the game.

“It was awesome being here with three other teammates,” said Perry. “Everyone here was really cool, it was a close knit family on the East side. Everyone put away their teams for that week and we all were a team for this week.”
