A Sea of Stripes

Pinkarnaval’s Tribute to Jean Paul Gaultier

Montrealers and tourists alike filled the sidewalks of St. Catherine last Saturday evening in anticipation of the Pinkarnaval parade, a tribute to one of the most creative fashion designers, Jean Paul Gaultier.

Spectators expressed their support by wearing striped attire. The parade was a collaboration between local Montreal artists and groups, celebrating Jean Paul Gaultier’s most iconic elements – naval-inspired stripes and the cone bra, made infamous by Madonna’s Blonde Ambition Tour in 1990.

The night started off strong with acrobats donning pink outfits and parading on stilts. The crowd was in awe of the giant mechanized dress that was a nod to the French designer – a truly original artistic creation celebrating Gaultier’s inspirational fashion.

A couple of great creations stood apart from the rest, like a man in naval stripes swinging from a huge soap-bubble-inspired helium balloon floating high above the crowd, making him the envy of every kid whoever wanted to sit inside a bubble.

I the spirit of a little humour, Rose, Just For Laughs’ lovable green monster’s girlfriend, floated down St. Catherine as her huge pink “Jean Paul Gaultier” cone bra floated behind her.

Despite the enthusiasm, the parade was chaotic and disorganized after the pink beginning. The night ended with a sea of stripped of men, women, and children led by an undistinguishable Jean Paul Gaultier.
