FC Montreal remain at the bottom of the United Soccer League Standings following a 2-1 loss at Stade Saputo to the Wilmington Hammerheads this past Thursday. A goal in stoppage time by Wilmington forward Will Heaney slashed Montreal’s hopes of obtaining their second win of the season.

“It’s a bit cruel, it’s a bit disappointing. I think we deserved more than this,” said FC Montreal head coach Philippe Eullaffroy. “As a whole, the game wasn’t bad, but offensively we are still a little bit timid.”

Despite FC Montreal being too timid for Eullaffroy’s liking, the team did stand a chance against the Hammerheads.

After an opening goal scored by Wilmington’s Brian Ackley on a diving header late in the first half, FC Montreal fought back in the second half. Forward Victor N’Diaye scored his second goal of the season after receiving a pass from midfielder Zakaria Messoudi.

“Victor [N’Diaye] is a player that moves very well, I know that he will always be in those kinds of places, in between the defenders, so I didn’t question myself and I placed him a ball and he scored,” said Messoudi of his equalising assist.

The hopes for a game-winning goal were high for FC Montreal. Unfortunately, they were crushed not long after the fourth official indicated five minutes of stoppage once the initial 90 minutes were played. Wilmington forward Marc Godelman dribbled the ball up the left side of the field before finding his teammate Will Heaney. The unmarked forward took a weak shot but the ball found its way into the net, sealing the win for Wilmington.

“It’s the retreat pass. I think there was a marking issue in the box,” explained defender Mele Temguia who was part of the play. “It’s the little details that make us lose games and points like this.”

FC Montreal is now on a seven-game winless streak. The team’s last and only win was on May 14 against the Charleston Battery. The team’s next two games are away from Stade Saputo, where the team has yet to record a win.

First, the Montrealers will look to avenge their season opener in Toronto as they will play Toronto FC II on July 4. The club will then cross the border to play its final derby of the season with the Rochester Rhinos.

FC Montreal’s next home game will be on July 12 as the Pittsburgh Riverhounds will visit Stade Saputo.
