The Concordia Stingers wrapped up a home-and-home series against the McGill Redmen this past Saturday, edging McGill 51-44. ConU was led by guard Mukiya Post’s 12 points in the victory. McGill’s Francois Bourque led his team with 13 points in the loss.

The win allowed the Stingers to jump into a three-way tie for second in the RSEQ conference, alongside Bishop’s and Laval.

The Stingers avenged their previous loss to McGill on Thursday, which was their first win against the Redmen this season. ConU lost the first of this week’s doubleheader, 65-60, on the road.

“I think we let one slip the other day at McGill. We made some mistakes, we’ve corrected them,” said Stingers head coach John Dore. “The improvement from the beginning of the year until now is monumental.”

The Stingers and Redmen kept it close for most of the game until the third quarter. ConU allowed only six points from McGill in the third frame.

“Our inability to make open shots in the first half really hurt us,” said McGill Redmen head coach David DeAveiro. “[Concordia] just wanted it more than we did today. Their effort on defense, their effort on the offensive glass, I thought it was the defence,”

The Stingers found themselves down at the end of the first and second quarter, but only by one point. The largest difference in points between both teams was seven, which occurred at the end of the third and at game’s end.

“We competed the whole game,” said Post. “We made mistakes. We were down at points, we were up at points.”

The Stingers men’s basketball team also participated in this weekend’s Shoot for the Cure event, as all of the Concordia teams wore pink shirts and raised funds for breast cancer research.

“We’re to trying to make people aware [of the disease],” said Dore. “It’s not just for women, it’s for men too, and we want our guys to give back to society and to be socially aware.”

The Stingers will play their next game on Feb. 13 at the Bishop’s Gaiters. ConU’s next home game won’t be until Feb. 21st against the Redmen.
